Household Gadgets
Children discuss labour-saving gadgets and chores which are still time-consuming or unpleasant. They then work in groups to design their own gadget and present it to the rest of the class as in the Dragon’s Den.
Cooking A 1950's Meal
Children have the opportunity to cook one course of a typical 1950s meal or to set the table. Discuss safety measures before children cook the shepherds’ pie, rice pudding or sponge pudding and custard. Will everyone have a taste of all three dishes?
Cloth Creation
Inspired by the Adinkra cloths worn on special occasions all over Ghana, children create their own versions. Children think carefully about overall design of their cloth and how they will block print using stamps.
Appliqué - Dyes & Designs
Amazing Amazonian Appliqué! Children use the work of an artist inspired by the rainforest and Deep in a Rainforest as a starting point for some art work of their own. They create simple designs and dye their fabric nature’s way in this session.
Wall hangings
Using the techniques of flour resist batik, children create wall hangings in the style of the Mozambique batik they have studied.
Children are encouraged to carefully select techniques and tools to create a quality product.
Cooking Food on an Open Fire
Immediately after the war many people cooked on open fires using wood, which was cheap or easy to gather free. Cook some potatoes on an open fire outside for children to taste with butter or cheese. If possible allow children to toast some marshmallows with adults.
Get Beading!
Time to have a go at beading! The traditional Ndebele methods of beading are demonstrated and children have a chance to experiment with this new technique.
Plantain Parties
Children discuss how all cultures have celebrations and festivals – special days in which special foods are eaten and shared. In parts of West Africa a child’s 5th birthday is special as many do not live to be five. Children make fried plantain and decorate plates.
Terrific Tagine
Children return to the notion of a staple food. They look at uncooked couscous grain and discuss how this grain is a staple of much of North Africa and Middle East. Then children cook vegetable Tagine and enjoy eating it!
Street Model
Building on previous session, children make a model of a street near the school (or from imagination). Class is split in two – one group make a ‘then’ model and one a ‘now’ model – using junk modelling techniques. Display along with leaflets previously made.
Beads On The Catwalk
Hold a fashion show in class! Children create their own beadwork belts based on Ndebele designs and using traditional methods. Sensational!
Modern Day Meals
Children discuss their favourite meals, made a model/drawing of it as session 4. One group prepares a chicken curry. All taste this and vote for either the 1950s chicken meal or the modern day curry.
Beadwork Fashion
Ndebele beadwork is a thriving tradition and can be found on all sorts of modern items. Children explore how it has been used in fashion and design simple belts based on the geometric designs of the Ndebele people
Icon Creation
Create an Ethiopian pocket icon. Children explore techniques of painting on wood and create their own icon images based on their studies.
